Years ago, the Toyota Highlander stood alone at a new SUV frontier. Toyota had created a unique sport utility, combining a car-like ride with SUV flexibility and convenience. The arrival of the Highlander signified the birth of the crossover SUV. Lexus introduced the similar RX 300 at about the same time, and competitors for both having been steadily springing up ever since. While the Highlander is priced to compete with offerings like the Ford Edge, Honda Pilot, Mazda CX series, and Mitsubishi Endeavor, it has the exclusive standing as the original.
Toyota builds the Highlander up from the Toyota Camry platform, which leads to sedan-like handling and very reasonable gas mileage. All wheel drive and a potent V-6 engine have always been Highlander options. For 2007, the Highlander is available in both gas-powered and hybrid models, with three trim levels. The hybrid is not offered with the Sport trim.
